San Fernando was founded in 1874 when members of the Los Angeles Vineyard Society bought the Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando. The society sold parcels of land to raise money for a Spanish mission in Northern California. In 1911, the city was incorporated and its name officially changed to San Fernando.
During World War II, the city became a major center for aircraft production, with Lockheed Aircraft Corporation constructing dozens of fighter planes and bombers in its factory located just north of town. After the war ended, the city shifted gears and became known for its dairy farms and strawberry fields.
