The History Behind The Gardens
Forestiere Underground Gardens was created by Baldasare Forestiere over a period of 40 years. Born in Sicily in 1879, Forestiere immigrated to Fresno County with the hopes of creating a better life for himself. He began work on the gardens in 1906 when he purchased 10 acres of land near Highway 99. During the day he worked as a farmer and at night he dug tunnels and chambers into his land to create underground rooms for growing fruits and vegetables. By 1940, Forestiere had turned his 10 acres into almost four acres of underground gardens. His ingenious design kept temperatures cooler during hot summers and warmer during cold winters making it ideal for growing citrus trees, olive trees, grapes vines, pomegranates, guavas, figs, dates, walnuts and almonds.
