A Brief History of Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory was built in 1935 and funded by a donation from Colonel Griffith J. Griffith, who left $700,000 in his will for the construction of “a facility or facilities for public recreation and amusement” in Griffith Park. The Observatory was designed by architect Frederick M. Olmsted, Jr., and opened to the public on May 14, 1935.

since its opening, the Observatory has welcomed over 75 million visitors and become an icon of Los Angeles. In 2002, the Observatory underwent a major renovation and expansion, which added more exhibit space, a cafe, and a gift shop. The renovated Observatory reopened to the public on November 3, 2006.
