A Brief History of Kimberly Crest House and Gardens
Kimberly Crest House and Gardens was built in 1897 by Mrs. Cornelia Hill, widow of Benjamin Briggs. The property was given to Mrs. Hill as a wedding gift from her wealthy father-in-law, George Kimberly. Today, the property is owned by the Kimberly Crest Foundation and is open to the public for tours, events, and educational programs.
The House Itself is a True Work of Art
The Victorian-style mansion is 6 floors and includes 12 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces, Italian marble mantles, German walnut wainscoting, stained glass windows, and intricate hand-carved woodwork throughout. No detail was spared in the construction of this home! Mrs. Hill lived in the house until her passing in 1925 after which her daughter Caroline Ingalls took ownership. Caroline Ingalls lived in the house until her own passing in 1966 at which point the City of Redlands purchased the property with the intention of turning it into a museum.
The Grounds are Manicured to Perfection
The 14 acres of gardens are truly a sight to behold. With over 100 varieties of flowers, herbs, and vegetables, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The gardens are maintained by a team of volunteers who work tirelessly to keep them looking pristine all year long. In addition to being beautiful, the gardens are also rich with history. Many of the plants were originally planted by Mrs. Hill herself and have been carefully cared for over the years by subsequent owners and volunteers.
